Adventures with Chuck
This month's update is a bit late, eh? It's because I had an illustrious guest: Chuck Wendig, author of many, many books, but most recently The Calamities. He was in town for Can*Con, and we had time to do some birding and such. We even filmed an episode of the Apple Snack Gang, a recurring feature on Chuck's Instagram page, where we reviewed a Canadian apple he'd never tried before, the Spartan (developed in B.C.). I got to introduce Chuck to a couple of favorite places in Ottawa, including Suzy Q Doughnuts and Ay Wey! Tacos. Also? During the con itself, we had a Horned Lark Press booth where we sold copies of our spiffy stories, and author Marissa Lingen was there to sign copies of A DUBIOUS CLAMOR! I also got to hang out with some authors at dinners and such and it was such a lovely time because hanging out with Canadians is LIKE THAT.

1. Chuck and I enjoy Suzy Q doughnuts. 2. A dinner party at Citizen in Ottawa: L-R is Marissa Lingen, Kate Heartfield, JP Cornell, Derek Kunsken, PA Cornell, and yours truly. 3. A couple of spiffy readers get A DUBIOUS CLAMOR signed by Marissa Lingen. 4. Chuck Wendig with three different kinds of al pastor tacos at Ay Wey! He declared them the best he's ever had. Yeah! It's a seriously legit place. 5. Chuck and I go birding (at one of three different places we visited). 6. A golden-crowned kinglet! 7. Lookit the pretty deer! 8. A ruby-crowned kinglet with a bug in its beak! 9. A thoughtful chickadee
Because Marissa was so cool, she signed some extra copies for us and now when you order A DUBIOUS CLAMOR direct from the publisher it comes signed (until we run out, that is). AND! We have bonus incentives here:
1) We took $5 off the cover price for ya
2) You get a Dubious Sword sticker
3) You get to choose ANY OTHER DOGGIE STICKER because of the bonus sticker-rama I'm describing for you below, just tell us which one you want in the order special comments/instructions
4) A recent happiness is that there's now a cheaper courier option for shipping if you're in the U.S.!

BEHOLD THE STICKER-RAMA
I'm not telling anybody about this but y'all. It's only for newsletter subscribers! Stickers are FUN because you can slap them on your laptop or your water bottle or your neighbour's forehead and feel good about your life choices. So, if you buy any book, you get a bonus sticker that you can choose from those you see in the picture below. Buy two books? You get two stickers. Three books? Three stickers. During the checkout process you'll see a box for special instructions, and you just list the sticker(s) you want there, and we will slip it in the order along with the Horned Lark sticker and other ones that may already come with the book(s) you order. We have ALSO reduced the price of most books—either the base price or we put them on sale. So hey, why not grab some books for either yourself or your homies for the holidays? The stickers make it extra fun and they'd be like $3 if you bought them separately. ENJOY. Here's where to buy, and the stickers are below. Hope you find something you like!

What I'm Reading Now
Whenever I go to Can*Con, Rebecca from Bakka Phoenix bookstore is there and she has recommendations for me. (Bakka Phoenix is a sci-fi and fantasy bookstore in Toronto that's super awesome because the staff reads a LOT and has the best recommendations.) She told me to read this so I'm gonna, because I do what Rebecca tells me.
Not with a Bang
Station Eleven meets Leave the World Behind in this family drama at the end of the world about a crumbling household’s attempts to find their way back to each other amidst a cataclysmic event.
"Our father had imagined the end of the world so often that, for a while, he believed that he summoned it."
The Minton family is in crisis. After losing his job, Marcus begins stockpiling cans, running evacuation drills and digging a doomsday bunker in the back garden. At the same time, his daughters are unravelling in their own ways – Chantale is being haunted by dreams of disaster, and Briar’s obsession with a missing classmate draws her deeper into the seductive world of a UFO cult. Meanwhile, no one is aware of the diagnosis their mother has been trying to keep hidden.
When, on the morning of the eldest daughter’s wedding, an extinction-level event tears the world apart, the Mintons must fight their way through a devastated city—back to safety, survival, and each other.
